Skin texture on the face refers to the physical surface of your skin.
Your skin texture is determined by a combination of genetics, natural aging, hydration levels, and external environmental factors such as sun exposure. These factors interact to dictate the size of your pores, the buildup of dead skin cells, and the presence of underlying structural proteins (collagen and elastin).
Five primary types of skin are: Oily, Dry, Normal, Combination, Sensitive.
Key Factors:
- Genetics: Heredity sets your baseline. It dictates your skin type, pore size, and natural turnover rate, making you more or less prone to bumpiness and roughness.
- Aging: As you age, your body produces less collagen and elastin, causing skin laxity and fine lines. Additionally, natural cell turnover slows down, leading to an accumulation of dead surface cells that make skin feel rough.
- Sun Exposure and Environmental Damage: Excess UV radiation degrades collagen and elastin, leading to leathery, rough texture over time. Pollution and other toxins also damage the skin’s surface and weakens its natural barrier.
- Hydration and Oil Production: The balance and natural oils (sebum) keep the skin supple. Dehydrated or dry skin can become flaky and tight, while an overproduction of sebum can result in enlarged, clogged, and textured pores.
It is important to understand your skin type in order to use the correct skincare formulas that will address your skin concerns while promoting a hydrated, healthy-looking complexion.
A daily skincare routine can help your skin look and feel its best, but different skin types have unique needs:
- Bumpy/Congested: Caused by clogged pores, dead skin cells build up or conditions like keratosis pilaris, resulting in tiny, closed comedones (whiteheads), or bumps under the skin
- Rough/Uneven: Usually a result of sun damage, dehydration, or an accumulation of dead skin cells that create a course feel
- Enlarged Pores: Frequently linked to oily types and excess sebum production, making pores look larger and more visible
- Flaky/Scaly: Driven by a comprised skin barrier or dryness, leading to peeling, red, or itchy patches.
- Acneic: Characterized by active breakouts, inflammation, and potential textural issues left behind by acne scars (indentations or raised bumps)
- Wrinkled/Mature: Includes fine lines, creases, and loose skin caused by aging, collagen loss, and UV exposure
- Smooth/Normal Skin: The ideal, well-balanced texture that is soft, supple, and free of dryness, oiliness, or blemishes
