The Brain-Skin Connection

The Brain Skin Connection

Our Mind and Body are Deeply Connected

Skin is the body’s largest organ that defends against injury and infection and modulates environmental influences such as UV light, heat and cold, and air pollution. The skin contains sweat glands and blood vessels (which help regulate body temperature), cells that use the sun to manufacture Vitamin D, nerve endings, and an array of immune system cells that ward off invaders such as bacteria and viruses. The brain and nervous system influence the skin’s immune cells through various receptors and chemical messengers. These may respond to psychological stress.

It is known that certain types of stress can interfere with the immune system, affecting the skin’s
capacity to heal.

Cause and effect can be difficult to pin down, however, considerable data suggest that in some people stress and other psychological factors can activate or worsen certain skin conditions. It is important to evaluate and treat a skin problem medically before looking into its psychological aspects. Many skin problems clear up or improve with standard antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and topical medications.

There are skin problems that have a psychological basis but can be exacerbated by stress and other emotional factors. They include Acne, Alopecia, various types of Eczema or Dermatitis (skin inflammation), Herpes, Profuse Sweating, Itching, Psoriasis, Rosacea, and warts.

Stress can cause wrinkles to form because high amounts of cortisol, the stress hormone, can break down the skin’s collagen and elastin. Chronic stress can increase inflammation, causing skin aging and accelerating the formation of wrinkles. Acne may surface on your skin as adrenaline and cortisol increase oil production. These hormones make the body’s oil thicker and heavier, therefore, clogging pores and forming blackheads. Your skin may also become dull, dimming your healthy glow.

When people are depressed they may end up tensing specific facial muscles, grimacing, or frowning. These “negative” facial expressions can become sort of etched into the skin in the form of fine lines and wrinkles. Active ingredients such as Retinol, Hyaluronic Acid, and Vitamin C help with collagen production, creating more skin elasticity, reducing wrinkles, and hydrating your skin.
