SKIN PURGING

Kiki Skin And Body Spa Andover Ma Blog Skin Purging

Skin purging is a temporary skin reaction to specific ingredients that may cause breakouts, skin dryness, flaking and peeling. It typically occurs when trying a new skin care product or certain facial treatments.

A purge starts when the rate of skin’s cellular turnover (aka the speed at which new, healthy cells reach the surface of the skin) is increased. This can push old, dead cells along with all the excess Sebum and buildup that comes with them to the surface, clogging pores and causing breakouts.

During the purging process, some will experience small clusters of specific types of acne, such as pustular breakouts, whiteheads or blackheads. However, if you are prone to cystic acne you might experience those forms of blemishes too.

Aside from the fresh crop of pimples there aren’t any significant symptoms associated with the purging process.

Skin purging may look different from person to person and will depend on an individual’s complexion.

Skin purging and Acne breakouts may look the same but their causes differ.

Breakouts typically occur due to Stress, Certain Foods, An Allergic Reaction, Clogged Pores or Irritation.

Causes of Purging are:

Products containing potent, active ingredients to target various skin issues such as:
Acne
Skin Aging
Wrinkles
Uneven Skin Tone

The most common ingredient to cause skin purging is Retinol, a form of Vitamin A and widely used in skin care.
Retinol is the mainstay treatment for acne due to its Anti-inflammatory properties and it’s ability to prevent the formation of new acne.
Retinol’s ability to promote collagen production makes it the standard treatment for premature skin aging.

Other active ingredients that are commonly used in skincare products include:
Alpha Hydroxy Acids
Beta Hydroxy Acids
Glycolic Acid
Salicylic Acid
Lactic Acid
Vitamin C
Retinyl Palmitate

If you are experiencing skin purging, continue using the products and adhere to their directions unless you have a severe allergic reaction.
The symptoms of purging should subside within a few weeks.
